U.S. Air Force, 1953-55

Highest rank: 1st Lieutenant

Awards and decorations: Uh – none

Most memorable military experience: What I remember best was the promise I would hold rank in the Reserve. A lie. They made us revert to 2nd Lieutenant; I declined to ever wear the gold bar again. Another lie was that Reserve duty was paid – which it was not; they had run out of money for some curious reason. And, finally, after deciding to ignore the Reserve and just not go which got me passed over for promotion of course, agreeing to “retire” as one of the oldest 1st Lieutenants around. We were mutually delighted.
